spaceship combat
Spaceship combat games have always been a favorite of mine. In my time, I've played quite a few. In fact, you could say that the time I spent playing fighting sail games (i.e. Napoleonic naval games) I was really playing spaceships on the water.
I have some information and opinion on this page, but for everything you would ever want to know, check out Starship Combat News!
amarillo design bureau
The Amarillo Design Bureau (or ADB) is the owner and publisher of the best spaceship combat games - Star Fleet Battles and Federation Commander!
I've played many space ship combat games - see the honor roll - and these are head and shoulders above the rest. Yes, SFB is complex, but that gives tactical versatility. FedCom is more streamlined but maintains the tactics. My recommendation? Stop reading this and go get in a game or six of either of these wonderful systems - you won't be disappointed!
honor roll
- Alpha Omega
- Originally published by Battleline and then picked up by Avalon Hill, this was an interesting game. The counters were pictures of miniatures! That, and the aliens used a stardrive that bounced them around the board. All in all, a nice game.
- Babylon 5: A Call to Arms
- Babylon 5 is the best science fiction show on TV - but, sadly the game is lacking and the miniatures are showing their age. My experience is that the figures are more flash than ship and the rules are more story than game. I can understand sticking with the source material, but one should not sacrifice playability to do so.
- Full Thrust
- Full Thrust is a very good set of rules for miniature ship combat - and they are free! The last book, the one with the aliens, is the weakest of the set. For a hexless space game, this one gets my highest marks.
- Federation Commander
- Federation Commander is my current favorite game - run and gun in deep space. Personally, I think it's Star Fleet Battles without the chrome (scatter packs, drone types, positron flywheel). It's an excellent game!
- Star Fleet Battles
- Star Fleet Battles is the best starship combat game out there - the rules are complex, yes, but then you can do so much with them. If you don't have the time for SFB, play Federation Commander.
- Star Fleet Battle Manual
- SFBM was an early miniature space ship combat games that played on the floor. There were 4" square cutouts with silhouettes of the ships to which were attached long strings with knots for weapon ranges. Quite an enjoyable game, really, and the first game to bring out the ships from the Star Fleet Technical Manual. There was an expansion, called Alien Space, that had non-Trek ships.
